District Vorpommern-Rügen

The rural district Vorpommern-Rügen lies within the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is, with its surface of 3188km², the fifth largest rural district of Germany. The Hanseatic City of Stralsund, functioning as the county town, the island of Rügen as the largest German island in the Baltic, and the peninsula of Fischland-Darß-Zingst are all part of this rural district.

About 223 470 people live here.

The rural district has become a tourist magnet and the health and tourist economy is predominant here due to the district’s unique position at the Baltic Sea coast, its diverse coastal landscape and the distinctly healthy environment. Agriculture and food economics come in second. Fertile soils and the maritime climate lead to sustainable agriculture and thus highly yields crops, with the aid of latest technology and precise agricultural measures. These crops are the feedstock for healthy food or fodder for farm animals. In May of each year, entire yellow colza fields turn this rural district into a sea of flowers with beguiling honey scent.

The natural stage in Ralswiek on Rügen with the Störtebeker-Festivals, the Vorpommern theatre, the former artist’s colonies in Ahrenshoop and the car-free island of Hiddensee as the special location during the Mecklenburg-Western Pomeranian music festivals are but a few examples of the district’s cultural diversity.
