Fencing Club Stralsund

Who doesn’t know the fencing bouts of the famous pirate Klaus Störtebeker he had to stand all around the Baltic Sea! Now, this form of martial art has returned home to the Hanseatic Town Stralsund and everyone interested in this sport can learn and train how to fence.

At the very beginning, there was the wish of Mr. Ivica Saric to share his love for this form of sport with others and to pass it onto young people. He found support in two students from Greifswald, who have been fencing successfully for years. They are the national champion and the national runner-up in foil fencing. Together, they introduced this form of sport at Stralsund’s schools and began their training at the HanseDom with interested children.

For over one year now, 14 children and 4 adults have trained foil fencing once or twice a week. In spring 2015, this encounter group formed, under the roof of the Sportverein Medizin Stralsund e.V. (a registered sports club of the medicine trade), the fencing club Stralsund.

The modern fencing techniques demand from the athletes not only a very good physical condition, but also anticipatory skills and the fastest technical execution. A lot of practice as well as theoretical knowledge is of essence to eventually master fencing. To actually be able to participate at tournaments, each and every fencer must pass a test after which he will receive a fencing deed. The first of Stralsund’s fencers are planned, already by 2016, to receive their fencing deed.

Mr. Saric is still the fencing club’s contact person and its soul. In cooperation with the trainers and parents, he found a good solution to acquire the special fencing equipment for the children at a low price. In addition, he called to life the Nikolaus Tournament for children from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Aside of Stralsund, there have been fencing clubs in Rostock, Schwerin, and Greifswald for quite some time. This tournament gives Stralsund’s young fencers the opportunity to prove their skills and compare them to other fencers and, at the same time, make new friends.

Stralsund’s fencing club is, of course, happy to welcome any new aspiring fencer. Fencing is a nice and challenging sportive activity for boys and girls of 9 years and older. So everyone interested in fencing, can thus write an e-mail at fechtclub-stralsund(at)web.de to watch and/or participate at the training.
