Welcome to the Veterans Fencing World Championships 2016 in Stralsund

Dear  Competitors and Guests,

in 2016 an especially attractive venue awaits you. We welcome you in the Hanseatic City of Stralsund which is located in the  north-eastern part of Germany. Stralsund is also known as the gateway to Ruegen the largest island in Germany. You will find an ideal place for fencing competitions here and you will have many opportunities to enjoy your free time. You can stroll through the narrow streets of the old Hanseatic City or you can explore nature in some of our famous regional national parks. During your stay you can be witness to one of natures most spectacular wonder. Every year thousands of cranes come here to rest to strengthen themselves for their flight south.

Hope, we caught your attention. If you want to know more about the region and the competition venue please visit the section “Host”. You can also look at for further suggestions what to do and see here.

We are looking forward to your visit.

Three weapons are used in modern fencing: the foil,  the epee and the sabre. In all disciplines the athletes must be in great physical condition, have a high level of concentration, a quick reaction time and precise aim.

France's H. Kiraly-Picot (R) literally runs onto the epee blade (losing the point) of Canada's J. Leprohon (L) in a bronze-medal match at the Athens Olympic games. France went on to take the medal.

The Veterans (50+) World Championships is an annual event and its location changes every year. In order to be one of the 700 active participants you must fulfill the criteria set by the national associations.

Dr. Angela Merkel in her role as a member of Deutscher Bundestag representing her electoral district supports the Veterans Fencing World Championships 2016 in Stralsund.

The Stralsund fencing club was founded in spring 2015 making it the sixth club in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. So the children and the youth find a new kind of sport to practise in their free time.

The region Vorpommern has an unique landscape: sandy beaches, chalk cliffs, beech woods, water and meadow areals which house many species of birds, for example the grey crane during spring and autumn.

Stralsunds historical centre is part of UNESCOs world heritage sites because of its well-preserved medival harbour city characterised by the gothic brick churches. In Stralsund there is also the wellknown museum OZEANEUM.
